Epsilon platoon CIP

Hi,

This is a post on behalf of Epsilon again.

We are going to Bishan Home for the Intellectually Disabled for a home visit. During the visit, we will engage in some simple activities and games with the residents to cheer them up.
Date: 17 August 2012, Friday
Meet at: Canteen, 2pm
Dismissed at: Raffles Institution, 5pm
Attire: School Uniform
Things to bring: Water bottle and valuables (leave your bags in school)
First of all, some suggestions when you are there:
  • If the people approach you threateningly, don't be frightened. Just lightly grab their wrists and "dance" with them. They will most probably get distracted and leave.
  • If they ask questions you cannot answer such as "Will I ever go home?" or "Will my parents come visit me?", you must divert their attention by leading them to activities or changing the subject.
  • If the people hit you, they are probably just beckoning to you. This is because their sense of touch is impaired and they feel that by hitting you, they are actually just tapping you. You cannot be scared and run away, just tell them kindly that if they want to beckon to you, just tap your hand.
  • If the people want to go to the toilet, inform the staff that will be present there.
  • If anything serious happens, tell the staff
For the 1.5 hours we have to engage them in activities, we have come up with 2 activities
Firstly, we will have station games including throwing ping pong ball into buckets, mini bowling, transferring water from one station to another
If this is a disaster, we will have musical chairs
If the station games fails and we have too much time, we will give out paper and ask the people to colour them. After that, we will show the people how to fold paper planes and then guide them through it slowly. Following that, we will ask them to throw the planes.
After that, we can end the activities and allow the residents to leave. We will then conduct debrief and clear up
This is a compulsory event and attendance will be taken. Absence without valid reason will not be tolerated.

Remember to submit your excuses to the batch group followed by hard copy of the excuse form to the sirs if you are unavailable on that day.

Attendance

Hi Cadets,

From now on, whenever you have missed trainings, you are expected to submit an excuse form (in hardcopy) the following training. Also attach a hardcopy of your reasons why you were absent (e.g. medical certificate, teacher's letter).

Here is the form that you guys need to use

This will take place immediately. Those who have already submitted an excuse for the days you were absent need not submit again. If you know you were absent on one of the trainings/events, please submit it ASAP. This is for your own good as we are not able to track whether you have a valid reason for missing training.

Paparazzi Photos (1)

Dear all,

During training today, I observed many cadets displaying good behavior and proficiency! I am impressed and decide to show you some photos which I have taken. I have decided that these cadets deserve platoon points for their platoons.

Year 2 Cadet Reeve displayed his excellent "hentak" technique where his legs are raised to 90 degrees. 10 Points to Omega

This is another example of good technique. Year 2 Cadet Andrew raises his legs up to 90 degrees during footdrill lessons. 10 Points to Iota

During Evacuation Lesson, Year 1 Cadet Benjamin was swift and quick in executing evacuation methods. Swiftness is essential is casualty evacuation! 10 Points to Omega

Year 2 cadets in squad formation. Look how smart and confident they look when they do not fidget in squad!

During Evacuation Lesson, Year 1 Cadet Yu Chen provided support for his batchmates when they needed help in executing evacuation methods! 10 Points for Epsilon

Good job everyone! Until next time, see ya!

How to write a proposal

Hi,

This is the rough format for a proposal. I know the PMs have probably been telling your OICs or 2ICs about how to write a proposal, but I guess an additional guide can't hurt.

Cover page - include the most important details (date, time, venue, etc.). Also write that the proposal is written by XX platoon, and of course the name of the event.

Overview and objectives - have a short description of what the event is about. Then, in point form, write out the objectives of the event (e.g. to promote platoon bonding, etc.).

Committee chart - include a committee chart with all the roles and the names of the people who hold them.

Safety details - discuss how you will manage safety during the event itself. You should include the safety protocols cadets are to follow during the events, as well as the safety procedures the organisers (your platoon) must take note of.

Manpower allocation - this is essentially a massive chart summarising exactly what each person in your platoon should be doing at a particular time. It should look somewhat like this:

Time           Venue                Activity             Name            Position              Role
0800 -       S. Raja Block     Reporting          Tom              2IC Admin         Take attendance
0815

Everyone in your platoon must be included in the manpower allocation table.

Activity details - most important section in the proposal. Include detailed descriptions of exactly what will be happening during the event itself. Basically, try to focus on what cadets will go through. It might help to think about it as such: what will I want to say when I'm briefing the cadets during the actual event? Write it down as if you were briefing the cadets, but in complete sentences of course (or point form).

The manpower allocation will mostly cover all the background work that might not be in the activity details. However, important information about some of the background work (e.g. where exactly the casualties will be hiding, etc.) should be included in the activity details. Please don't include things like where the logistics ICs should be though.

Logistics - Produce a table with the following format:

Item                       Quantity              Source                                                Remarks
Glowsticks              40                      Supermarket - Logistics IC will buy     ...

If your proposal is very complicated, an additional column for the activity that the item will be used for might be helpful.

Appendices (if any) - include any additional information, rubrics for competitions, etc. that is not essential to the proposal. These might be used by only 1-2 specific people.

Newspaper collection

Hi everyone,

Sorry for the oversight, but we forgot to inform you that newspaper collection will not be tomorrow. It has been postponed to next Saturday, 4 August.

Please report at the Main Atrium in your PE attire or unit t-shirt at 8am. There is no need to bring anything except for your water bottle and consent form (which we will be giving to you on Monday or Wednesday). The event will last until approximately 2pm.

We will basically be going from flat to flat in the HDB blocks opposite RI (blocks 101 to 116).

If you are unable to make it to this event (or have to leave early/come late), please email your excuses to our batch group, rircb61@googlegroups.com, or pass your excuses to us next Monday.

CAC Drama Champions!

Hi,

For those who don't know, we got overall champions for the CAC drama (Category 3)! Congratulations to all the actors, stagehands, and anyone else who helped out.

Unfortunately, we did not get into the finals for CAC category 4 (shield), where we had to design an innovative product to help specific groups in the community.

On a side note, platoon points have been added for the inter-platoon relay, which Iota won. Epsilon came in second and Omega third. Iota thus receives 150 points, Epsilon 100 and Omega 50.

Accident during fun day

Hi,

For those who don't know, an unfortunate accident happened during fun day and this caused Kelvinder to be sent to the hospital with a hairline fracture on his wrist.

So if you have facebook, please go and wish Kelvinder well. He probably won't be back in school for some time. Or you can express your well wishes on the tagboard.

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, and we'll see you next Monday (with your platoon flags :D).

Fun day

Hi,

Fun day is going to happen this Friday (6 July), from 1.30pm to 3.40pm. Please be attired in your PE kit or Red Cross unit t-shirt. Please also be reminded to take a heavier recess and a light lunch so you don't get stitches during the games.

For those who don't know, fun day is just a simple event organised by us for you to just have some fun, relax and bond with your batchmates through games and such. So we hope to see you there unless you have a valid excuse (please email our batch group, rircb61@googlegroups.com, if you have a valid excuse for your absence).

That said, hope you enjoyed the CAC performance today! The team has really put in a lot of effort (sacrificing some of their holidays as well) to train for it, so we wish them all the best for the preliminary round.

B61's New Mission & Vision

Hi All
Some of you might be curious or have been wondering about our new unit direction and focus under B61---after all it's a new start and hence a new beginning. We thus bring you this official update to provide everyone with a succinct and relevant explanation of B61's new initiatives and direction:
Mission & Vision
(Vision)--"to instill a sense of identity within cadets for the RIRC community, and to also build up their social relationships and sense of responsibility"
Firstly, our Unit vision---we seek to instill a greater sense of responsibility and identity within all of you for yourselves, your platoon, your Unit. We want all of you to not only feel a sense of familiarity and placing within your few short years in the Unit, but to actually help you to build up and foster your friendships and relationships with the RIRC community. That, we believe, is the more enduring and valuable benefit a cadet can derive in his time in the Unit, and with them we strongly believe that you will have a far more meaningful and memorable time in your cadet years. Have faith and trust your batchmates, your seniors and your juniors---they will be the people you will be interacting with for the next few years or so, and we hope beyond that. As a UG, we will also place a greater emphasis on your leadership and social skills, as we believe in their importance in supporting and helping you through your lives.

(Mission)--"to build up cadet proficiency and competence in the core areas of FA, FD and Evacuation, such as to build up our Unit's ethos of excellence"
As cadets of RIRC you have a responsibility and calling to uphold our reputation and capability to attain excellence---hence we will actively seek to build up cadet proficiency and competence under our leadership as we note that there has been lately a decline in standards of cadets' proficiency in certain subject. Additionally, we will seek to concentrate our efforts in attaining results in competitions---they ultimately serve as the true barometers of our Unit's proficiency and dedication to our cause, so we will take competition participation and involvement very seriously.
Due to the syllabus change about to be implemented by HQ (the details are still not yet finalized however) certain subjects will be sidelined (i.e FD, OA etc.) and instead a greater emphasis will be played on subjects or aspects like FA, Evacuation as well as Community Service. A new ethos and paradigm shift in HQ has necessitated the above changes, whereby the RCY movement will transition towards more active community service and involvement rather than disaster management capabilities (i.e evacuation). However, we will still uphold the core tenets of our Unit, which exists in the special capacities as a Red Cross unit and also a UG, namely: FA, Evac and FD. We believe that these subjects are an inseparable and unique aspect of every RIRC cadet, and we will thus similarly treat them as such.
Lastly, you guys have been briefed on our new focus on the platoon system---we hope you guys will take this opportunity to engage better with your fellow cadets, and build up better relationships with them, so that your time in RIRC will be a more meaningful one. And of course, to get more platoon points :) (Good job Iota--you'll get your reward on Wednesday)

Thanks and Have a Nice Day ! :)

Youth Day + Iota's reward

Hai guize, dis is David.
Ok yeah anyways a few things
1) For having the most platoon points, Iota gets a *secret* reward on Wednesday (huzzah)
2) Due to there being a Youth Day holiday tomorrow, there's no training for tomorrow (unless you're from CAC drama, in which case I'd BETTER SEE YOU THERE AH)
3) Happy Youth Day.
4) Here's a complimentary video for you. Awesome stuff.

On a side note, keep the answers to the Phoenix Questionnaire coming in! (Or else. Harrharr.)

Have a nice day.

Platoon Flags

Hey guys! Please get reminded that from now on you are required to bring your platoon flags for trainings. This will be effective as of now and thus you will be required to bring your flags from this wednesday onwards. If you have lost your flag or are not able to bring it for training, make sure you tell us! Have fun for your youth day holiday, cheers!

Phoenix Questionaire

The Pheonix Questionnaire returns!
For those of you who don't know, the pheonix questionnaire is a question each week which you can answer to earn platoon points for your platoon. The best response will be awarded with additional points!
This week's question is...

What is the most important thing that you and your team should have during a firedrill? Why do you think so?

This "thing" can be anything: it does not have to be a physical object.

Each response is worth 15 points, while the best response is given 50 points!

Send in your responses by 3rd July, Tuesday, before 9pm to rircb61@googlegroups.com for your response to be awarded points.

Iota: 595 points
Omega: 565 points

We apologise for the delay, because it took us some time to collate the points and moderate them. We moderated the points a lot to prevent them from outweighing the platoon points earned during normal trainings too much.

Don't worry if your platoon lost out slightly - the platoon points are still very close, so it's still very possible to catch up even if your platoon is lagging behind somewhat.

As for the best sec 1 and 2, we've chosen Aloysius and Li Yuan respectively after some discussion. As such, Iota will receive 100 points (50 points for each). But don't be discouraged if you haven't won it, since you'll have a chance in future camps (like November camp this year). Learn from the winners and you might be able to be the winner next time (since we try not to let people win twice in a row).

There's no real "secret technique" or anything - just be enthusiastic, be a good batchmate or platoonmate to your friends, and be disciplined. We don't demand perfection or anything, and we believe anyone can get this award if only he gives his all.

We'll have some rewards ready for the two winners on the first training after the holidays (T2W1 Monday) :D. So don't pon training :P.

Enjoy the rest of your holidays!

Rendezvous with destiny to reign and to serve

Hi.
This is awesome. And funny.
Take it as DVOTW edition number <whatever it is>
:)

In any case, good job with surviving Himara. Unless you didn't come. In which case, boo.
We hope that you were really inspired by all the achievements of the past batches. Those people, our long string of our (spiritual) "ancestors", didn't have all our fanciful stuff to work with - no Facebook/twitter/myspace/friendster/telephones (omgwtfbbq how does one do it without telephones) or whatever it is. However, they still managed to achieve excellence with the unit -- and it wasn't by any miracle, or because people back then was magically infused with power two times more than what we have now. No, it's because they were committed. They were committed to RIRC, and they strove and fought hard to bring glory to the unit.
Keep in mind that they were the exact same ages as you guys are when they managed to win all those competitions, achieve all those achievements (hurr) and most importantly, develop themselves and others into people with fine, outstanding characters. If those people, lacking all the luxuries that we possess now can do it, so can you.

See you guys when school reopens. We hope that your warrior spirit's still there ;)

More awesome dance videos now to make up for the long hiatus :)
Yay. This guy's self-taught (i.e. loads of talent and all) and bloody pro. So yeah.
Anyways, here's one more with a VERY cool concept

That's all for this week. So yeah.

Committee chart for 2012-2013

Hi everyone,

Here's our new committee chart. If you have any questions about what each person is supposed to do, feel free to ask on the chatbox. But you should understand roughly what the chairperson and vice-chairperson do. The chief specialists and training executive will be the ones deciding how much you're going to enjoy your lessons and whether you get your badges. The projects executive is in charge of extra events like PN and such. Admin executive just does admin - logistics, attendance, keeping track of badges, money, etc. As for PMs, if you still don't know what they do...

We hope to be able to lead and serve you well as NCOs for the coming year, so do give us your support so we can bring RIRC to even greater heights.

Bring a can opener for camp

Hi,

We sincerely apologise for the late notice, but each platoon should bring at least one can opener for camp. Please try to bring at least one. If you're really unable to do so, we can provide a few.

Thanks, and hope to see you excited for camp tomorrow! :D

Performance Night and reminders for camp

Hi,

For those who went, we hope you enjoyed PN! And of course, our dear Samuel's *ahem* performance. I personally think it was a better idea to get dance pros to teach us the dances instead of us coming up with them ourselves. Saves us the effort of chereographing too.

Anyway, this is just a reminder that each platoon must bring its flag for camp. It's extremely important. If you don't bring it, well, there will be lots of fun stuff happening to you.

Just a final reminder - camp starts at 8am on Wednesday, 30th May. Please be there on time.

And if you haven't started packing, tomorrow's a good time to start. Don't do last-minute packing only to realise you need to rush out to buy something.

Himara camp packlist and consent form

Hi all,

Here's the consent form for Himara.

This is a link to the camp briefing slides:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ocjzooqh7miiz6b/Pack%20list%20and%20contact%20details%20%28shortened%20version%20of%20slides%29.pptx

Do note that two items have been added to the packlist - a sleeping bag and an army poncho.

EDIT: Sorry, sleeping bag was already in the packlist. So it's duplicated. Sorry about that. You only need to bring one, of course.

Please remember to bring your signed consent forms to camp.

See you in a few days' time!

Ace Star Camp--Reminders

Hi All
We have already briefed you on the upcoming Ace Star Camp and are rather happy with the enthusiastic response. For all those who have expressed your interests but have yet to gain confirmation or approval from your parents, please do so by this Wednesday's training (which is also the last training before your June Camp).

Additionally if you are facing any difficulties or problems in terms of fully committing to the whole camp event but would still like to participate, please send your details and particulars to Alfonse IC (csyalf0328@gmail.com) so that we can resolve this issue quickly.

*We'll only be able to post confirmed details about the camp (i.e packlist, locations etc.) once we are able to resolve all administrative issues related to the participating cadets, and hence we seek your cooperation in terms of notifying us of your problems as soon as possible.

Thanks and have a nice day :)

May/June Hols Events

Hi all!

Here's a summary of the 3 awesome events lined up for you during the May/June Holidays! :

26 May (Saturday) - Performance Night
Meeting Place: 10am @ Raja Block
10am-5pm - Ice breakers with other schools and Dance Training
(If you have to leave halfway/come late, inform Darryl Sir during training next week)
6.30pm-9pm - Actual Performance Night

If you're asking why dance?

There will be a total of 6 dance crews battling, each crew consisting of Sec 1-3s from RIRC and cadets from other schools, and most likely your platoon points are at a stake (each platoon split into 2 groups)
So do your best during this Night!

More details will be given on Wednesday's Training next week.
(If you can't come for the entire event, inform Darryl Sir as well, as attendance is compulsory)

30 May (Wednesday) - 1 June (Friday) - RIRC June Camp Himara
Meeting Place: 8am @ Raja Block

This will be a very important camp for everyone as you will the rich history of RIRC since 1952, and most importantly gear yourself up for the challenges in Semester 2. It's always been Iota winning June Camp, so lets see who will win this year.

The inaugural Passing Out Ceremony will be held on the last day of June camp too, where we will witness the handing over of positions from the Sec 4s (B60) to Sec 3s (B61), and reveal your new leaders, from Platoon Mentors to the unit Chairperson.

Camp Briefing will be held during next Wednesday's Training.
(If you have to leave halfway/come late, inform Samuel I/C during training next week)

9 June (Saturday) - 11 June (Monday) - Ace Star Camp
Meeting Place: 8am @ Raja Block

I know that you're already going for RIRC camp, and may not wish to go for another one, but this is a camp you would not want to miss.

Trust me, many Red Cross units from other schools in Singapore are dying to join this camp, and this opportunity is given to you. Only 12 sec 1s, 2s and 3s are invited to participate in this camp. As I've said, 4 badges await you, and you will be 'competing' with 9 other schools who will be taking part in this camp too. The programme has been lined up to show you how the subjects in RC are intertwined and how the World of Red Cross is a lot bigger than you think. These are activities that you will never encounter during your regular unit trainings or your unit camps, as most of the activities are planned by VIs and myself.

Don't worry if this camp is new to you, because you will be grouped amongst your RI people. In any case, this camp will be a great exposure for you, and it'll open your eyes to the world outside RI, and who knows, you might become a stronger, much more confident person than before!

We have about 5-8 slots left, so inform Jian Xing I/C during next training if you're interested to join!

Use your June Holidays well guys! See you next training! :D

World Red Cross Day!

Hi guys!

Just in case you guys didn't know (or notice), World Red Cross Day was on 8th May, but you guys were having your MYCTs and the like then. Hence, we will be having an internal celebration (similar to what NPCC did today) tomorrow morning, and we will be reciting the RC promise (if you don't know look it up lol), so do make sure all of y'all recite along with us.

Just some info: WRCD is to commemorate the founding of the International Red Cross, and it's date 8 May, coincides with the founder, Jean Henri Dunant's, birthday. Now I'm sure y'all would have learnt about it for RCK, but we wouldn't be here without his contributions and the small initial idea of creating a neutral organisation to wounded soldiers. So if you're planning to emulate some famous guy in the future, don't emulate people like Albert Einstein, emulate Jean Henri Dunant! :D What can be better than being credited with founding an organisation that has since saved hundreds of thousands of lives.

Here's a video regarding the founding of Red Cross, starring Jean Henri Dunant in it: (Watch it to the end, there are english subtitles throughout)

With that, do reflect on our CCA, RIRC, and be aware that it is part of whole much bigger movement, dedicated to helping the sick and the suffering :D

Signing off,
Your Chairperson, Kai Yen

P.S. Dunant received the first ever Nobel Peace Prize in 1901. This was the speech dedicated to him:
"There is no man who more deserves this honour, for it was you, forty years ago, who set on foot the international organization for the relief of the wounded on the battlefield. Without you, the Red Cross, the supreme humanitarian achievement of the nineteenth century would probably have never been undertaken."

Evac (S) Re-accreds

Hi sec 2s,

Next monday, there will be an Evac(S) re-accreds for those who did not pass the previous accred. As such, there will be a evac lesson next training in preparation for the accreds. Please read up on your evac notes before the lesson so that you can come to the lesson knowing which techniques you are not so sure of.

For those who have already passed, treat this lesson as a refresher course in preparation for camp. You guys will definitely need the skills during camp

On a side note, good luck for your MYCT results :)
Hey Cadets!

For those who needed the emails of the IC's who briefed you on POC today, they are
hethav12@yahoo.com and allanzhouyang@gmail.com .

If you need to ask anything about POC, please do it by private email to those emails, because all of the actual content has to be kept secret from the sec 4s.

Thanks!

Collection of library materials to set up a library in Cambodia

Hi sec 1s and 2s,

Sec 1s, we've already briefed you about this, so those who still have yet to inform us of your recess timings, or who have realised any mistakes in their recess timings, please email our batch group as soon as possible. Our email is "rircb61@googlegroups.com".

Sec 2s, the Red Cross Youth Chapter from RJC is organising a charity event in which they are collecting library materials to set up a library in Cambodia. I believe they'll probably announce more details during upcoming morning assemblies. As such, they need our help to man the booths during recess times. Thus, could all of you send us your recess times for Monday to Thursday. The booth will be open next week. Our email is "rircb61@googlegroups.com". If you have classmates who are in RIRC also, just choose one person to send an email and state on whose behalf you are sending the email.

Thanks. Please do inform us as soon as possible because the sirs are rushing us for it.
