Inter-platoon competition!!! (It's back!)

Hi Sec 1s and 2s, as most of you have probably realised, there is a lot of emphasis on nurturing the platoon spirit between the Sec 1s and 2s in the same platoon. Thus, we have come up with a challenge for the platoons to compete with each other to earn points on this very blog. First to correctly answer the question will win 10 platoon points. There is also another 10 platoon points up for grabs for the most comprehensive answer. The question for this post is: 'What is the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke? Compare the two on the basis of the different symptoms. Also include the treatment for both of the injuries in your answer.' Good luck and may the best platoon win! XOXO

Aloysius - Batch 63 :)

P.S. results after Wednesday, 2 April would not be considered. Thanks! XD

  1. Heat Exhaustion
    - Failure in body's system to regulate heat
    - Usually associated with excessive loss of electrolytes

    Heatstroke
    - Temperature rises too high due to environmental heat
    - Usually lack of sweating

    Difference in Symptoms
Heat Exhaustion: Pale, clammy skin; weak pulse; profuse sweating
Heatstroke: Hot, flushed skin; no sweating; full-bounding pulse; shallow breathing

  2. Addendum:

Both are treated by moving the casualty to a cool, but non air-conditioned area. Remove or loosen clothing with the casualty's permission.

Heat exhaustion: Sponge with water and fan to cool the casualty down. Give the casualty water or isotonic drinks if possible.

Heatstroke: Put a blanket over the casualty, and pour large amounts of water to cool the casualty down. Fan him also.

  4. Heat stroke is the most serious form of heat injury and is a medical emergency.Symptoms may include:

    Throbbing headache
    Dizziness and light-headedness
Lack of sweating despite the heat
    Red, hot, and dry skin
    Muscle weakness or cramps
    Nausea and vomiting
Rapid heartbeat, which may be either strong or weak
    Rapid, shallow breathing
Behavioral changes such as confusion, disorientation, or staggering
    Seizures
    Unconsciousness

Move the person to a cool, shady area -- and remove any unnecessary clothing.
Fan air over the patient while wetting his or her skin with water from a sponge or garden hose.
Apply ice packs to the patient's armpits, groin, neck, and back. Because these areas are rich with blood vessels close to the skin, cooling them may reduce body temperature.

    1. Heat Exhaustion is milder, but should still be taken seriously. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

      Confusion
Dark-colored urine (a sign of dehydration)
      Dizziness
      Fainting
      Fatigue
      Headache
      Muscle cramps
      Nausea
      Pale skin
      Profuse sweating
      Rapid heartbeat

Move the person to a cool, shady area -- and remove any unnecessary clothing.
Drink plenty of fluid (avoid caffeine and alcohol). Best if it is isotonic like h2o and 100 plus etc.

  6. A way to differentiate the two is that heat exhaustion and heat stroke is that exhaustion means tired and when you are tired from doing vigorous exercises, you will be sweating. SO, heat exhaustion involves sweating a lot.

  7. Epsilon wins the full 20 points for having the most comprehensive answer and the fastest to submit. Good job and keep it up. Other platoons, IOTA and OMEGA, please do not feel disheartened. More platoon points would be up for grabs! :D
